At Riesterer & Schnell, our commitment to customer service goes beyond the latest technology and equipment—it’s about the people who keep our customers running. Recently, several of our service technicians shared their personal journeys, highlighting the diverse paths that lead to a rewarding career in agricultural equipment service.

From High School Apprenticeships to Full-Time Careers

Reed, Ethan, and Lukas each began their careers with Riesterer & Schnell as high school apprentices. Their stories show that a passion for working with machinery can start early—whether it’s tinkering with engines in the garage, helping out on the family farm, or simply being curious about how things work.

  • Reed’s journey began with a love for fixing anything with wheels. After a stint milking cows, he realized his true interest was in equipment, leading him to an internship and eventually a service technician role.
  • Ethan grew up around tractors, thanks to his family’s restoration business. He discovered the opportunity to earn and learn through a youth apprenticeship, which set him on the path to a full-time position.
  • Lukas, a self-described “city kid,” didn’t grow up on a farm but was inspired by his father’s work with farmers. He joined Riesterer & Schnell during high school and found his passion for agricultural equipment.

Mentorship and Hands-On Learning

Jason Knoener, a 23-year veteran at Riesterer & Schnell, also startedas a youth apprentice. He emphasized the importance of mentorship and hands-on experience, recalling how the company supported his education and growth from technician to service manager and beyond.

The team discussed the value of programs like the John Deere-sponsored two-year associate’s degree and other technical diplomas. These programs blend classroom learning with real-world experience, allowing students to alternate between school and working in the shop during busy seasons. This approach ensures that new technicians are well-prepared for both in-shop and on-the-road service.

Diverse Opportunities and a Bright Future

One key takeaway: you don’t need a farming background to succeed in ag service. As family farms become less common, Riesterer & Schnell welcomes anyone with a passion for equipment and a willingness to learn. The company offers multiple pathways into the industry, from technical diplomas to associate’s degrees, and supports employees with mentorship and ongoing training.

Technicians like Reed, Ethan, and Lukas have worked on everything from forage harvesters and combines to tractors and sprayers. Their experiences highlight the variety and challenge of the work—and the satisfaction of solving problems for customers.
