the best 4 wheel drive lawn tractor with power.

5/5

I have a John Deere 758 and a gr 2120,you pay more for the 758 but you get a much better machine, more power to plow snow , (unbelievable strong) try going in reverse on a gr 2120 good luck with that on hills, the 758 eats hills ,four wheel drive is superb ,I plowed my 300ft. driveway and around my house all winter long .The power flow with bagger works great too. Mows like a champ and the seat is the most comfortable .

WE HAVE 1,040 HOURS ON OUR x758 WE LOVE IT!

5/5

Perfect mower for our property. Hills uneven terrain, woods, ect. I love the all wheel drive and comfortable seat ( upgraded) with armrests. We selected the 60" HC deck and so glad we did. It has been a true performer. Best option for us was the 0% down and 3 years free financing. This is your go to lawnmower if you need to get things done!

Pros

  • all wheel 4x4
  • knobby tires
  • bright lights
  • hand grips on both sides

Cons

  • cleaning the radiator screen
  • no slow moving sign on back of seat

Great improvements,mulch control Awesome!

5/5

This is my second x758. My first was a 2015 model. I love the improvements in the mower deck gauge wheel adjustments. You can get them closer to the ground without touching it which is great for uneven yards. I also installed the mulch kit with mulch control on this model and I am thoroughly impressed with it. Several positive things happen with this kit. First and foremost my yard looks awesome. The first time I used it I could not figure out where the grass was going because it was chopped so fine. I fully expected that when I finished mowing and looked underneath the deck it would be a clogged mess. To my surprise it was not and the matter of fact, there was hardly anything underneath. Another thing, grass does not shootout all over everything. This keeps your mower and tractor cleaner. Also your air intake screens stay cleaner. If the grass gets a little too high like it did on me when I went on vacation, you just open up the lever on the mulch control and the grass will shoot out. I will always have this installed on any new mower I get. I love the new digital dash. I was not sure I would like it at first but everything is readable in the bright sunlight. You also get a few more indicators that the old analog dash did not have. There are a couple of things that I do not like. First the seat seems harder to me. I am on this about 2 and 1/2 hours each time and I know it's not as soft as my old x758. I'm not sure what happened here or if it's just a hard piece of foam in my seat but I like my old seat better. I do have a little over 30 hours on the machine now and it does not seem any softer. Another thing I do not like is that the tires are made in China. The ones on my old x758 were made in USA. I'm not sure when they switched because they have the "made in China"turned toward the inside on each tire. I expect that when I pay a premium price for a premium mower for it to have american-made tires period. Overall a great mower though and far better in durability.

Pros

  • better mower adjustments
  • i love the mulch control option

Cons

  • seat harder than 2015 x758
  • made in china tires

One word: awesome!

5/5

I purchased my X758 the spring of 2018 to replace a 12 year old JD L155C. The big draw for me was the strength & torque of a diesel engine and the full time four wheel drive. Although I would use it for summer garden & lawn work my primary desire for it was to couple it with a hydraulic lift/tilt and a 54" snow blade. I live in northern Vermont where we get long, cold, snowy winters. 2-3 foot snows are common and I needed a machine that could tackle it. I found it with the X758. I added the said hydraulic system and 54" blade along with the 3-cu ft Broadcast Salt Spreader - LP67403. The X758 was a BEAST this past winter!! There was NO storm or amount of snow that it could not handle, and we had a LOT! The power under that hood is VERY impressive. Also: using the drive on-drive off system to remove my 60" mower deck was just as easy as they show. And finally the power steering, tilt steering wheel, rear lights make this not only a beast but the Cadillac of beasts. I LOVE that tractor and yes (it actually happened yesterday afternoon!!) I have been stopped when out and about on it by my neighbors, asking about it. They have watched me with it, even though they have other brands, they were REALLY interested in my X758.

Excellent MOWER

5/5

Have owned for 4+ years and not a single issue! Have used to plow snow but typically for mowing grass which is way to tall. The 4 wheel drive works excellent on the 10+ hilly acres and is now used more than the John Deer 4120 tractor.

Finest mower I've ever driven

5/5

In the past I have had a 425, 455, 495 then I went the zero turn route. Every spring there are always a few spots on my property that are just too wet to mow. This spring I have been stuck mutiple times with my zero turn. After using my neighbors new X730 to roll my lawn, I liked it so much that I went and bought a new X758 with the 25 gal mounted sprayer and deluxe 12.5' boom. I LOVE IT!!! I thought it would be better for the wet spots....It is AMAZING in the wet areas!! It will go through anything that I have tried this far and it's more wet out there now than it was a month ago! I was spraying weeds around the pond and I suddenly noticed I was already into the wet spot that I have been stuck in soooo many times with my other mowers, I didnt panic, just held the peddle on my X758 and it went right through it, didnt even spin a tire!! I have even mowed hills that I have never been able to mow before!! I love it so much I called my neihbor and told him he needs to take it and go mow the wettest areas in his yard....when he came back he said "I want to get one too". He just got his last week and he and his grandson say it is the nicest mower they have driven! BTW...The sprayer is amazing too, and the quick hitch on it is just the perfect way to mount it. Soo easy and fast, even if its full of lawn chemicals. I could not be happier with this purchase!! Thank you JD!!

from x730 to x758

5/5

I have used a x730 for 4 years from lawns to irrigation ponds. Nothing leaves the property looking like golf course like the x700 series. The auto connect deck has saved me in the middle of nowhere. I use it for mowing, tilling, and have an after market front end loader. 500hrs and 4 years later, no regrets. I just upgraded to x758 diesel for more torque and 4 wheel drive. i haven't found any other manufacturer with a machine this versatile nor practical. This is a lifelong machine not an economy, and is worth the investment.

Poorly Engineered in many aspects

1/5

I have dreamed of owning a X748 for many years and I finally arrived to a point in life where I could swing the purchase and bought a X758 in the spring of 2018. Over the course of the summer I noticed the deck has poor aerodynamics resulting in a poor cut of tall grass because the blades can't create enough lift to cut. I typically cut at 3" to 3.25" and if I let the grass get too long the results are poor. This fall I bought the 47" snowblower for $3400 and it's use in cold has uncovered some serious design flaws in the transaxle. I have a heated garage that is typically maintained at 50 F and a dehumidifier with about 50%. Twice when I took the tractor out in the cold (-10 - 0 F) and returned to the garage I have woken up the next day to find quarts of transaxle fluid on the floor. We just had a snow storm that resulted in 15" of snow and I checked the fluid level a day after using the tractor and upon removing the dip stick there was enough pressure that it sprayed oil out. This thing has 36 hours on it, John Deere is smart enough to know that offering a John Deere promise longer than 30 days would cost them significantly. This thing is sicking and frustrating not what you would expect from a $17k tractor. Do not buy one of these unless you enjoy buyers remorse!

Engine Overheats and Mower Scalps

4/5

My X758 is a year old and has 109 hours. I use it to mow about 1.5 acres plus trails on my hilly nine acre property. It’s equipped with the 54” HC mower deck, mulching kit and the 47” snow blower. For the most part I’m pleased with the tractor as it is well made, the 4-WD works well, the tight turning radius is amazing and fuel economy is good. However, the seat switch is way too sensitive as every time I turn around to back the tractor, the engine kills. The tractor overheats frequently when mowing my prairie trails as a lot of chaff and dandelion fuzz swirls around and is sucked up against the radiator screens, so I have to stop and clean it. When conditions are bad in the fall, I have to do this every 10 minutes. Frequently when I move the throttle lever, I accidently turn on the headlights so they’re on most of the time, which can cause a shorter bulb service life. I am disappointed that the tractor did not come with 4-way flashers as I occasionally drive on the road to get to one portion of my property. The tractor is equipped with rear lights and green arrows in the IP, so why not include 4-way flashers at minimal cost? The IP screen fogs if it gets wet. I don’t use the cup holder; prefer a larger, more useful storage compartment that eliminates cup holder. I’m disappointed in the mower deck as it scalps the turf on high spots and the wheels make furrows when turning on hillsides. The mower probably works well if you have a billiard-table flat lawn, but there’s not a flat and level area anywhere on my property. I’ve tried adjusting the height of the deck wheels, but they still damage the lawn. My Simplicity had a deck with a full-width roller in the rear which greatly reduced scalping. I would like to see Deere offer an optional full-width roller or at a minimum a third wheel mounted in the center at the rear. The furrowing might be reduced if the front wheels were casters.

Tough, reliable, economical, comfortable and stylish.

5/5

I bought a X738 in the spring of 2014 to mow 4+ acres, to pick up leaves in the fall, move snow in winter and to have something to trade-in for a X758 tractor in the future. The X738 did its job and I traded it in the fall of 2015 for a X758 with a new 60 inch mower while keeping the 54 inch blade and 47 inch snowblower that I bought with the X738 . The X758 currently has 225 hours on it and has exceeded my expectations in all seasons going on three years now. In winter the front blade and snowblower clear heavy, wet snow from 400 ft of driveway and other areas with ease and the quality of the mowing cut in summer has been outstanding. I install the implements IAW the operator manuals and have never had the performance problems or concerns that I have read in other reviews, especially with the mower. The Yanmar diesel engine offers superior fuel economy which improved as the tractor was broken in from when it was new. I also own a John Deere 3005 CUT with a 72 inch rear finish mower. However, using the X758/60 inch mower combination, my mowing time has decreased by 33% because I can mow faster and more closely around trees and other objects which reduces weed-whacking time. J started with John Deere via a love affair with the "two cylinder" tractors. The X758 is just a great, great, great, great grandchild of those old "Johnnie-Poppers" that is cut in the same tradition of quality and performance. "Nothing runs like a Deere" - you can take that to the bank.

Built like a tank!

5/5

I can't say enough about this tractor. The diesel engine has lots of power to mow, plow and tow anything you can think of. I have used this tractor daily for the past few months and couldn't be happier. I have a 54" HC deck, 54" blade (with extensions to bring it to 72" for snow plowing), tractor shovel (bolts on 54" blade) which I have used to haul and grade dirt after stump removal. I could not find any reviews on the tractor shovel but I find it very handy. It is like a 4:1 bucket and works way better than a wheel barrow. I also have the 14 bsh. bagger and love it. This tractor is very stable on steep grades and the four wheel drive does not ruin your lawn. This is built very well and is designed to help in every way from the bright lights for night operation to the built in receiver hitch in the front to help move my trailer around to the shed. I have not had any issues with this tractor and recommend this to anyone who needs a Swiss army knife of lawn tractors.

Pros

  • powerful
  • stable
  • great fuel economy
  • bright work lights
  • easy deck operation
  • great leaf/grass removal with power flow bagger
  • tilt steering wheel
  • very nice seat

Great Tractor

5/5

Bought an X-748 with a 54" deck mid-summer. I have 30 hours on it, thus far, and it has been flawless. Does a great job of mowing, plenty of power on my hills, and very comfortable and easy to operate. I also bought a 47" snow blower, and I am looking forward to using it this winter. I have about three acres of lawn to mow, and my driveway is over 100 yards long. Chuck from Wisconsin

Diesel engine was just an afterthought.

2/5

John Deere put a low RPM diesel engine option on a tractor that was first designed for gas. They had to mount it backwards making the rad fan by your knees. Dandelion fluff, dust, from the nearby chute causes the airways to be blocked and frequent engine heat issues. The battery is at the front with a shroud over part of it. You must first disconnect the headlights and fully remove the hood to boost it, then reverse it all with it running. The air filter can't be removed without the hood fully off. The lower RPM engine paired with the stock pulley size causes thatch to tumble out of the deck slower in a way that resembles a child vomiting down the front of their shirt more so than a tractor laying thatch flat on a lawn. We have downgraded to this 2 wheel steer version. The linkage on the all wheel steer version weakens quickly making it hard to keep in a straight line and completely breaks off to the rear wheels on average once per year for us. I believe this could have been avoided with some extra metal and a minor redesign as all the stress lands on a linkage ball joint that is prone to wear. Ours over 10yrs have all had seal issues causing it to burn coolant at some point. Once rebuilt they do continue to run fine. I dread having to hook the deck back up after maintenance due to the finicky pto shaft on the decks that have to be at a certain orientation. Why am I being so harsh on this tractor's shortcomings? If they overcame these issues, it really would be the perfect commercial grade tractor. They are so close and it feels like they just stopped the design process and just made the diesel engine an after thought. I hope they re-issue these with a redesign. I have to add a couple stars for the wonderful reasons we continue to keep ours on the fleet. The AWD pulls out mowers out of mud pits, This thing cuts massive hills we can't even get a push mower up It is lighter than our z-mowers. The diesel tank lasts a 14 hour day for us.

Pros

  • awd
  • loves hills
  • torque
  • large tank

Cons

  • heat issues
  • picky pto linkage
  • low rpm

Not a good mower system

1/5

Full time 4 wheel drive tears up my yard while mowing around trees or sharp turns, plus the mower deck also rips up my yard by not having swivel wheels and it scalps by not having the rollers. Worse mowing system I have ever owned. Deere contacted me about my satisfaction and I expressed the above concerns. Next thing that happened was the dealer that sold me the system was contacting me wanting me to bring it in for them to "try" some things. I had already complained to that dealer in 2014 with NO concern from them until Deere contacted them, why would I want to take it back to them? I used to like mowing and was proud to own a Deere. Probably will never buy another one.

Pros

Cons

  • full time 4 wd rips up the yard when turning

Great tractor, not the best cut

4/5

I bought my 2013 X758 new. 60" deck, 54" snowblower. Did an excellent job moving the snow. Not a fan of the 60" deck. It digs into any area that isn't flat. Doesn't stay level. I'm trading it in on a new Scag Commercial mower. I have 143hrs on the X758.

Pros

  • tractor is great
  • great powertrain
  • easy to maneuver

Great working tractor

5/5

I purchased my X758 June 2015. I have 135 hours on it now without any problems. It dose a beautiful job mowing or mulching with the installed mulch kit..It is very fuel efficient, I had a John Deere 400 before and it took 5 gallons of gas to mow my yard 2 times, now I can mow the same yard 3 times on a tank of fuel. The deck is easy to remove and reinstall with the drive over deck feature. I would recommend this tractor to everyone. I also purchased the 54 in. snow blower and it dose a great job handling the snow.

Lots of power, very easy to operate, will cut thru the deepest grass with ease.

5/5

Bought this unit in February 2016 to cut grass at my weekend place, about 4 ac of total cutting area. My place also has some very steep slopes...AWD helps tremendously. Added armrest which adds to comfort a lot. I have around 80 hours on it with no issues....would not expect any either btw... Pros: Power to spare, comfort, quality, good looking machine Cons: If the outside temperature is above 90 degs and you are cutting heavy grass it will run hot...then again so do I at that temp...
