Great Product except

4/5

Its been running great for two years then while mowing one day it just stopped. After looking around for a while I found a cheep broken plastic piece attached to a rubber hose that went to the fuel tank\pump. its in a spot that is not easy to get to so brush or any other obstacle would not of likely caused the break. I called the dealer to see about getting it in to be fixed. 4 year bumper to bumper warranty you would think includes pick up, It doesn't. Not everyone has the means to bring in a ridding tractor for warranty service so be prepared to pay. That's not my case but everyone should know. I'm most disappointed in the cheap plastic part on the mower and the fact that John Deere is suppose to synonymous with quality and service I think these two have lost a lot in recent years.

Mower Deck is Difficult to service

3/5

I bought the X390 because of the Power Steering. Great feature! Other than that, it's pretty much like my previous X3xx series L&G tractors. Except -- this deck is harder to service. And it needs service due to abnormal belt wear. My very pricey replacement JD belt says "made in Romania." JD has removed the belt tensioning lever that all my other mowers had. Now it says, insert a 3/8" socket wrench to reduce the tension for belt removal. A breaker bar with a 3/8" adapter was a far better choice for me. Every new model that I get seems more difficult to service the mower deck. This model has the ACCEL DEEP mower deck. That means it can collect even more grass clippings. And I can't tell a whit of difference in the cut quality. To me this deck is a solution to a nonexistent problem. Overall, JD took one step forward and two steps back with the X390.

Pros

  • power steering

Cons

  • accel deep deck
  • belts that lasted only two seasons of normal use

Excellent Mower

5/5

I bought my mower new in August 2017. It replaced a LA 145. The X390 is much more comfortable to operate with a better seat and more powerful engine. The mower deck cuts and discharges grass much quicker. The power steering is effortless and the power lift mower deck is great. I use it to cut two acres of lawn without a bagger. I highly recommend it.

Bad Seat Design

4/5

The seat is not made to use in cold weather. My seat cracked in November the first year. Had to borrow trailer to take to dealer to get seat changed. 2 weeks later it cracked again. I called and told dealer would bring it in when spring weather warmed up. Seat was cracked bad on both sides by spring. Drove 12 miles to borrow trailer to haul it 22 miles for the second time. Told the dealer would see him next spring. Drove the 22 miles back home then the 24 mile round trip to return the borrowed trailer. Conclusion if ever plan on driving it with temperature 35 or below you better stand up and step off which i can not do with my bad knees. I have other models of John Deere mowers that never has that trouble.

Pros

  • easy to steer
  • easy to use
  • when grass is short cuts very fast

Cons

  • bad seat design
  • have to choke every time to start
  • want cut tall grass without clogging up

Problems With Installation/Removal of Attachments

3/5

Bought a new John Deere Lawn Tractor X390 with a Snow Blower. I would have thought that John Deere would have capitalized on previous successes and improved in areas where necessary. I purchased the X390 to replace my JD 325 tractor which had developed surging revs when running in High Idle which the local JD dealer and JD Help Line could not find a solution for. Tractor worked great with the snow blower blowing snow but when it came time to change to the lawn mower I had great difficulties. The snow blower drive belt was extremely hard to remove (No instructions in the manual other than “Remove the belt”). I had to tie and wedge the spring loaded tension arm back (Very difficult access to tension arm) and pry the belt from around the drive pulley. The previous tractor, a John Deere 325 snow blower installation/removal was straight forward sliding under and attaching some pins. I didn’t expect the new tractor to cause so much trouble. I expect a lot of agony when putting it back on again. Is there a better way or better instruction than what is in the manual? The lawn mower seems to stay a lot cleaner than the previous one but is bit more of a problem removing/installing to clean than the previous one. The dogs that go into the lift arms no longer come out of the holes as easily as the previous mowers did and must be played with a great deal to get them uninstalled. The drive belt tension arm can no longer be loosened with a simple unhooking of a latch but now requires a ½ inch drive power bar to take the pressure off. The front hook up bar requires removing/installing some odd shaped clinch pin affairs (Replaced with normal pins). It seems like JD engineering or production quality control let this tractor and JD down. If you have better methods or modifications to improve doing the removal and installation of both the mower and snow blower, would you tell me where to find them?

Pros

  • great snow blowing and lawn cutting

Cons

  • extremely difficult to remove or install blower

Great mower

5/5

I have been using this since early spring and could not be more impressed with the the comfort and its mowing capabilities. After looking at the competition I determined that Deere offered the best value but couldn't decide between the X590 and X390 but fortunately went with the X390. After using both on the same lawn the mowing capabilities of the two is very comparable. The advantages of the X590 we're a more comfortable seat, larger tires, and a heavier transmission with positraction. Having no plans to pull any heavy loads or use a snow blade, etc. I could not justify the additional cost. The quality of cut is exceptional and clipping distribution is as well. If you are on the fence on which to buy if your primary objective is to mow flat ground and have no plans for heavy use the X390 is probably your best choice.

Pros

  • fantastic cut
  • hydraulic steering and deck lift
  • digital fuel gauge
  • super tight turning radius
  • easy deck adjustment
  • plenty of power
  • comfortable ride
  • smooth foot controls

Cons

  • deck wheels dig mark in soft lawn

Great Mower but much more than just that!

5/5

I own a plant farm/orchard with over four acres of lawns, but I wanted a lawn tractor which could double for other duties like hauling soil and spraying. This tractor has an exceptional rugged mower which does a beautiful job of mowing and the hydraulic lift lets me raise the mower effortlessly for mowing in bumpy terrain. The mower, itself, can be removed in less than a minute which lets me use the tractor for other tasks. I ordered the mower unseen and was a bit worried that I had been careless, but I was totally impressed when it arrived. Every thing about the machine is heavy duty: bolts, steering, transmission, controls. The button for mowing in reverse is minimally annoying, but I have pets and grandchildren; It is worth the trouble. If you need a tractor for more than just mowing, this is the machine for you. If you just want to mow less than an acre, you may be better off with a lower model. I hope John Deer keeps this machine unchanged for several years....I can't think of ways to improve it.
